ESG 2015 Year in Review

As many of you know, this year the Force reawakened and Empire Saber Guild was there to heed the call. To say this was a busy year for our members is certainly an understatement. We never could have imagined the opportunities that awaited us in 2015…

At the top of the year, our goals for 2015 were to drive awareness of our group while continuing our mission to raise money for noble causes such as our local charity, St.Mary’s Healthcare System for Children.  We proudly raised an astounding $8,760 for charities throughout the year – not including the $6,000 Saber Guild Temples from all over the country helped raise at Star Wars Celebration in California.

IMG_3711In addition to raising money for various charities, our members volunteered their time to perform or troop at local hospitals and conduct Padawan Training at local libraries throughout the boroughs. The Force is strong in New York and we are always fortunate to have the opportunity to bring a galaxy far, far away closer to home.

Speaking of events and troops, we doubled our appearances from last year to this year with over almost 30 events under our belt. We returned to some of our favorite experiences such as Star Wars Day at the Brooklyn Cyclones, WinterCon and Eternal Con and added a few new events such as: performing at Star Wars Celebration, conducting Padawan Training Institute at New York Comic Con, participating at Star Wars Day events with the NY Mets and Brooklyn Nets. We were also invited to two major product launches: Force Friday at the Toys R Us flagship store in Times Square (now closed) and the Battlefront Launch Party at the Microsoft Flagship Store.ESG_Microsoft_2015_WEB-61

Screen Shot 2015-12-31 at 12.42.58 PMWith the new movie coming out, Lucasfilm Ltd. reached out to their recognized fan groups to help bring some Star Wars authenticity and magic to programs like Good Morning America. Perhaps the highlight for many of our members was being able to stand in the crowd when Harrison Ford and BB-8 were welcomed onto the show. We were also fortunate to have been pulled into quick segments with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Lupita Nyong’o. It was an experience we won’t soon forget.

How were we able to accomplish all this in one year? Bottom line: we could have never done this without our 47 members. Thank you to all members and welcome to our new members as of 2015:

  • Kenneth Jay McQueen
  • Brian Forman
  • Alex Lau
  • Mike James
  • Eric Leone
  • Tyler Brinckerhoff
  • Andrea James
  • Lek Cornell
  • Michael Vasquez
  • Andrew Webb
  • Lisa Giunta
  • Laura Giunta
  • Joseph Cluckies
  • Zhane Esthiem

A continued goal for 2016 is to raise awareness and drive membership. As the movie drew near, we were fortunate to be featured in:

Last but not least, we elected a new council in October around New York Comic Con. They are as follows and we thank them for their continued hard work:

  • Local Director: Rubin Polizzi
  • Asst. Local Director: Derek Hidalgo
  • Local Stage Director: Tyler Welsek
  • Public Relations Director: Amy Chrzanowski
  • Conduct Director: Paul Sposato
  • Temple Librarian: Michele Montanez

Thank you all for your continued support of Empire Saber Guild. We look forward to keeping the great momentum going in 2016 with our next performance at Heroes & Villains Fan Fest January 23-24th in New Jersey!

If you have any additional questions, we encourage you to reach out to us. If you’re interested in joining us on a Friday for one of our open rehearsals, please check our schedule on Facebook.

Have a happy and healthy new year. May the Force Be With You!

FAQ:
How old do I have to be to attend class?
Becasue this is a combat based class attendees must be 18 years or older to attend on their own. Anyone between the ages of 13-17 may participate in class but MUST have a parent or guardian present throughout the time of rehearsal. Children under he age of 13 may attend as spectators but must remain outside of the practice space with their parent or guardian at all times.

I Have Never Done This Before–Is That OK?
It does not matter if you are new to lightsabers or have been rehearsing for years. Come to a class, have a great time and work up a sweat.

What Do I Need to Bring?
You need to bring the most important thing–YOU! It’s also a good idea to bring workout clothes (sweatpants and a T-shirt are just perfect) and comfortable shoes. You don’t need a lightsaber to start off–there are always extra to go around. However, if you plan on coming frequently we can help you find one that is just right for you. IMPORTANT: No toy lightsabers - combat sabers only. These things are cool and look great but they will break once you get going.
