About Saber Guild: Empire Temple

esg_stmary_wm_2016-130

Our mission is to share our love of Star Wars with people of all ages and to follow the Jedi path of spreading hope and good will wherever we go. We aim to bring a little bit of wonder and transport our audiences to a galaxy far, far away…

Saber Guild is a non-profit, all-volunteer, international organization that specializes in lightsaber stage choreography, education, and community events. Saber Guild temples can be found in Europe, Asia, and across the US. Empire Temple is the New York chapter of Saber Guild.

We may seem like your typical dress up fan group, but that is not the case. Here’s what truly sets us apart:

Charity Based:

As defenders of the galaxy, our main focus is to raise awareness and money to support causes important to our group. To date, we have raised thousands of dollars for both national and local charities such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, St.Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, and the American Cancer Society.

Jedi/Sith Focused:

Unlike our fellow Lucasfilm charity based groups, Saber Guild is made up of authentic Jedi and Sith warriors. Our members must meet strict screen quality costume regulations and are armed with combat ready lightsabers which we wield as the only performance based fan group affiliated with Lucasfilm Ltd.

Experts in the Force:

Not only are we actor combatants and costumers who love bringing our Star Wars fandom to life, but we are also extremely adept in telling stories about the Force and improvising with our youngest fans about the lessons we can learn from both sides that wield it. From the ancient teachings, combat forms, and classic Star Wars character archetypes, we’re a font of knowledge and a source of entertainment regarding the legends of Jedi and Sith throughout the galaxy.

SaberGuildHistory of Saber Guild

Saber Guild was started by Rob Estrada, member of Rebel Legion and the 501st Legion, Star Wars costuming clubs. Those clubs, by charter, were not allowed to partake in lightsaber choreographed entertainment, so Rob took it upon himself to make his own costuming club, which would focus on that. There were already some lightsaber clubs out there doing shows, but none of them at the time were LFL recognized, so he decided to figure out a way to make that happen. He enlisted a couple of his 501st and RL friends to put on a simple choreographed lightsaber show to do for charity events, and after gaining the trust of LFL Saber Guild was granted recognition to bear the Star Wars moniker, and become brand ambassadors.

New York, Star Wars JediHistory of Empire Saber Guild

Empire Saber Guild (ESG) is the New York chapter of Saber Guild, and was founded by Matthew Procaccini and Adrienne Lombardo in 2013.  ESG started off with only three members and one rehearsal a month. Since its inception ESG has grown into a group with an ever growing cast of Star Wars enthusiasts and weekly rehearsals. We have performed in various events all over the NY area, including comic conventions, baseball games, private parties / weddings and even children’s hospitals. Empire Temple’s emphasis on charity has created a culture of giving and community service that our members take pride in.

This week at Saber Guild: Empire Temple's Naboo Outpost we welcome Empire Temple's Local Director, SG-053 Rubin Polizzi, and Local Stage Director, SG-117 Rodney Clarke, to help walk us through a behind the scenes look at how to perform Empire Saber Guild's Padawan Training Institute (PTI).

PTI is one of Empire Temple's most well known performances and can be seen at comic conventions and other special appearances. For younglings, participating in our performances will be their first step into a larger world.

In this special class our Official and Non-offcial members will learn how to act the part of Jedi Masters and Sith Lords, plus we'll take a look at how we run our custom audio setup to create a truely epic experience!

While attendance is free, we ask that all participants make a donation of $3-$5 to help pay for the rehearsal space.

FAQ:
How old do I have to be to attend class?
Becasue this is a combat based class attendees must be 18 years or older to attend on their own. Anyone between the ages of 13-17 may participate in class but MUST have a parent or guardian present throughout the time of rehearsal. Children under he age of 13 may attend as spectators but must remain outside of the practice space with their parent or guardian at all times.

I Have Never Done This Before–Is That OK?
It does not matter if you are new to lightsabers or have been rehearsing for years. Come to a class, have a great time and work up a sweat.

What Do I Need to Bring?
You need to bring the most important thing–YOU! It’s also a good idea to bring workout clothes (sweatpants and a T-shirt are just perfect) and comfortable shoes. You don’t need a lightsaber to start off–there are always extra to go around. However, if you plan on coming frequently we can help you find one that is just right for you. IMPORTANT: No toy lightsabers - combat sabers only. These things are cool and look great but they will break once you get going.
