It May Seem Like Hoth…But We’re Having Fun With the LSC and Play Fair

To say it’s been a busy time in the galaxy is quite the understatement. Empire Saber Guild was proud to be part of two major events the weekend of February 13th-14th, 2016, despite the Hoth-like record breaking cold conditions outside:

  • Science, Sabers, Star Wars Weekend at the Liberty Science Center
  • The Liberty Science Center celebrated the Star Wars universe with their science filled tribute February 12th – 15th. Despite the snow and record breaking cold, Darth Vaders, Kylo Rens, Luke Skywalkers, Princess Leias, Han Solos, Reys, Jedi, Sith and droids alike made their way to the museum to learn how to be a Jedi, design a droid, blast rockets at the Death Star, roar like a Wookie – and welcome R2-D2 to his new home.
  • Our members: Markov Stormwind, Bran Dellock, Kamyos Rehnard, and Kandar Goodwén, along with members of the 501st NorthEast Remnant and Madalorian Mercs Raquor-daan Clan were there to greet the 10,000 people who gathered in NJ for the event.
  • Thank you to all who said hi and were there to welcome our friend, R2. It was a fitting celebration for a beloved droid.

  • Play Fair
    • For the first time, the Javits Center opened its doors to families during the weekend of Toy Fair for the inaugural Play Fair. Sensing a strong presence in the Force, Kamyos Rehnard, Kandar Goodwén, Kobault Stillwater, Orin Kel, Reos Tokani, Zephisto, and Bran Dellock were proud to train 48 Padawans throughout the course of both days on the mainstage. The younglings proved themselves strong in the Force, quickly picking up Shii-Cho, the art of the action pose, and learning a defense combination which they confidently tested against our Masters Kandar Goodwén and Kobault Stillwater.
    • For the Padawans who weren’t able to join us for training, they were invited to our booth where they could engage in the final trial every Jedi Padawan will face: constructing your lightsaber utilizing Star Wars BladeBuilders product generously donated to us from Hasbro. Our members assisted as younglings of all ages used their imagination and ingenuity to construct unique lightsabers and then pose with some of our Jedi and Sith Masters.

We hope to see you around more events in the next coming months. Please check our Facebook to see where we’ll be next in the galaxy! May the Force Be With You.

How old do I have to be to attend class?
Becasue this is a combat based class attendees must be 18 years or older to attend on their own. Anyone between the ages of 13-17 may participate in class but MUST have a parent or guardian present throughout the time of rehearsal. Children under he age of 13 may attend as spectators but must remain outside of the practice space with their parent or guardian at all times.

I Have Never Done This Before–Is That OK?
It does not matter if you are new to lightsabers or have been rehearsing for years. Come to a class, have a great time and work up a sweat.

What Do I Need to Bring?
You need to bring the most important thing–YOU! It’s also a good idea to bring workout clothes (sweatpants and a T-shirt are just perfect) and comfortable shoes. You don’t need a lightsaber to start off–there are always extra to go around. However, if you plan on coming frequently we can help you find one that is just right for you. IMPORTANT: No toy lightsabers - combat sabers only. These things are cool and look great but they will break once you get going.

Saber Guild: Empire Temple is the New York City temple of Saber Guild: a Lucasfilm Ltd. recognized international Star Wars lightsaber performance and costuming organization. We are a not-for-profit fan group who performs at fan conventions, charity events, sporting events and official Star Wars events focusing specifically in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, The Bronx, Yonkers, and Westchester - and larger events around the world such as Star Wars Celebration.

We are choreographers, dancers, actors, artists, costumers, filmmakers and photographers who volunteer our time to share our love of Star Wars with the community. Our focus is on lightsaber performance for stage and film.

We always welcome new members to train in the ways of the Force. We hold weekly rehearsals and master sessions with guest instructors in stage combat, performance, martial arts and acting.
